My Career in the T.A.- by Corporal Carter

I had been running for over ten years in organized races, medals for this and medals for that, I decided I wanted more, more of a challenge in life. It was in April 1997 that I decided to join the Territorial Army not knowing what to expect but to be told that this was going to be a challenge from this day forward.

With regard to the weekend training away living out in the world of green climbing over hills, fighting mother nature at its best rain, hale and snow whatever I kept on going. All the years of running and training had eventually had paid off, I had passed selection, it was time to goto Catterick in North Yorkshire for the two weeks.

Catterick wasn't easy it was hard, wet, cold and sleep deprivation was eating into my system rapidly, I had to get a grip. Taking control when your "chin strapped", tired and wanting to go home isn't easy your there, you put yourself there and that's that. Get on with it. The feeling when I knew I'd passed was one of the best. Fantastic !!.

I was now a new member within "A" Company with the lads glad to be one of them, but very new indeed. The challenge still not over the adrenaline still a rush I decided to go for my Physical Training Instructors Course nearly one year to the day since I joined. Again I had to train even more putting in the effort in my own time and throughout the T.A. weekends.
